For the last 15 years Catholic Charities has hosted a gift drive for its clients. Donors from schools, churches, hospitals, local stores, and individuals all come together to create a Christmas for children and families who might not otherwise be able to have gifts. Each year this program grows and it is a blessing for us to witness the generosity of our donors to our clients.
There are many ways you can help:

Nurture health and hope in our Kenton women’s village garden. Our garden is growing! Please help our villagers who are working to regain their stability and self-sufficiency access fresh whole and nutritious food by donating needed items including soil, tools, seeds, and plants for the upcoming season. COMMUNITY WAREHOUSE– Collects donated furniture, dishes, utensils, linens, and other home goods, and works with social service agencies to get those goods in the hands of refugees, people fleeing domestic violence, those transitioning from houselessness, those who need it most. Pick-up and drop-off locations in N.Portland and Tualatin (see website for info).
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ReSTORE– Accepts new and gently used appliances, furniture, building materials, household goods and more from individuals and companies. Each ReStore is unique, and many locations also accept items outside these categories. Drop-off at ReStore locations (see website for info).
FREE GEEK– Takes old, unwanted technology and turn them into community learning opportunities. They would be happy to make use of electronic items that are no longer of any use to you. Drop-off at Free Geek (see website for info).
VIETNAM VETERANS of AMERICA– Especially needs clothing! Clothing of all types and sizes (men’s, ladies, children’s, baby’s), clothing accessories, shoes (all kinds), baby items, house and glassware, books, toys, bikes, stereos, radios, portable TVs, all bedding, draperies, curtains, kitchenware, usable small furniture and rugs, small appliances, tools (all kinds), jewelry and cosmetics. Pick-up and drop-off locations in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington Co. (see website for info).
SOLES 4 SOULS– Collects unwanted footwear and clothing to distribute to people in need across the country and the world. The organization also works to fight poverty by helping people start businesses selling the donated shoes and clothing they receive. Accepted donations: Soles4Souls accepts all styles and sizes of new or gently-worn shoes and clothing by drop-off or shipped donations (see website for info).
PLANET AID– The organization makes it easy to donate and recycle all of your unwanted clothes, with the mission of saving all textiles from the landfill to help protect the environment. Specifically, the non-profit collects donated clothing to be sold and reused in developing countries. All of the proceeds go toward development projects to fight poverty in these areas. Accepted donations: Planet Aid accepts all clothing (including items with holes, stains or tears). The only articles of clothing that are not accepted are those that are dirty, wet or moldy. Shoes and other textiles, such as bedding, towels and curtains, are also accepted. Donations at drop-off sites (see website for info).
FREE THE GIRLS– Don’t throw away your old bras! By donating them to Free the Girls, you can help bring economic opportunity to survivors of sex trafficking in places like Uganda, El Salvador and Mozambique. The organization gives all donated bras to women who have escaped human trafficking; the women then have the opportunity to sell the bras in second-hand markets in their communities and earn an income that can support themselves and their families. Accepted donations: accepts new and gently-used bras of all styles that are in good condition at local drop-off sites (see website for info).
DRESS FOR SUCCESS– If your closet is overflowing with professional clothing, consider donating some pieces to Dress for Success, a non-profit that empowers low-income women by providing them with work-appropriate attire as they seek and maintain employment. Since its founding in 1997, the organization has expanded to nearly 150 cities in 25 countries and has helped more than 1.2 million women secure jobs and develop their careers. Accepted donations: They accept nearly new, ready-to-wear women’s clothing that is work-appropriate and business casual. All donations must be laundered or dry-cleaned and in good condition. OREGON HUMANE SOCIETY– The Oregon Humane Society rescues, heals and adopts more than 11,000 pets each year. They never place a time limit on how long cats, dogs and other pets stay at their shelter. OHS relies on donations to support their adoption, education, and animal rescue programs. OHS can accept most brand new or gently used pet items, such as pet food, leashes and collars, bowls, toys, clean litter boxes. Donate outside shelter doors (see website for hours and info).
PROJECT POOCH– Project Pooch has successfully paired incarcerated youth at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility with homeless shelter dogs since 1993. Youth (guided by professionals) learn to train the dogs, groom them, and help them get adopted. The dogs leave the program ready to be great pets, while their trainers re-enter the community with new job and personal skills and increased compassion and respect for all life. Both youth and dogs experience unconditional love, often for the first time. Most Needed: Flea drops, blankets & towels, dog food, dog toys & accessories, dog grooming and health, kennel supplies, copy paper, forever stamps, paper towels. Drop-off location details on website.
CHILDREN’S BOOK BANK– The Children’s Book Bank fills homes and lives with engaging, culturally diverse books because all children deserve to have books of their own. When they do, magical things happen — books ignite curiosity, spark the imagination, and open young minds to limitless possibilities. Books needed at this time: Due to current needs in our community, they are only able to accept new and gently used board books and picture books, such as: Board Books, Picture Books, Alphabet Books, Spanish Language Books, Books About Numbers, Colors, Animals, Shapes, And Words, Story Books, Rhyming Books, Multicultural Books. Donations by appointment only (see website for info).
SCHOOLHOUSE SUPPLIES– Since opening our doors in 1999, the Schoolhouse Supplies mission remains the same: to support public education in the Portland area by providing free school supplies to students in need. They do this because they believe that every child deserves school supplies and has the right to a quality education regardless of their family’s income or racial/ethnic identity. Their goal is to level the playing field, so every child has access to the tools that allow them to achieve academic success and feel confident. Schoolhouse Supplies collects new and reusable school, office, and art supplies, as well as books, games, and other learning materials suitable for classrooms. Needs include these categories: Basic School Supplies, Office supplies; Incentives (Book covers, coloring & activity books, current calendars/day planners, unused hygiene items, stickers, journals, small toys, and prizes), Arts & Crafts, Stationery, Filing, Classroom Materials, Books (Children’s books, reference books, young adult literature, dictionaries, National Geographic magazines). Examples of each category and donation drop-off appointment information on their website.
NW CHILDREN’S OUTREACH– Functions as a collection and distribution center, collecting resources for these children and distributing the goods to local Care Providers who meet directly with and prescreen the children.
MOTHER AND CHILD EDUCATION CENTER– Mother and Child Education Center has offered no-cost, practical help to thousands of pregnant women in the greater Portland area since its founding in 1971.
