Finding Strength: Kenton Women's Village Hosts First Self-Defense Class

Posted by | Catholic Charities Communications

Women at Kenton Women’s Village took part in their first trauma-informed self-defense class, gaining practical tools and renewed confidence thanks to Instinct Defense Academy.

At Catholic Charities’ Kenton Women’s Village, safety and empowerment go hand in hand. This month, women from the Village took part in their very first self-defense class, led by Peter and Megan from Instinct Defense Academy.

Peter brought decades of experience to the class, while Megan shared her perspective as a woman who also has been trained in self-defense. Both came with trauma-informed practices, listening carefully to participants’ stories, concerns and questions. The day before the class, they even joined the weekly Village meeting to build trust and get to know the women.

The response was powerful. Participants told us:

  • “It felt empowering to know that you don’t have to be strong to fight off an attacker.”
  • “Peter showed us moves that anyone could do that are quick and easy.”
  • “We learned that awareness of your surroundings is the first step in protecting yourself.”

Many of the women at Kenton Women’s Village have faced harassment, intimidation or even assault during their time experiencing homelessness. This class provided not just practical tools but also healing space, conversation and the chance to feel stronger together.

Peter and Megan plan to return quarterly, and we are grateful for their generosity in sharing time, knowledge and hope with the women of Kenton.
