Showing Up, Week After Week

Posted by | Catholic Charities Communications

Each week, our outreach team heads into Southeast Portland to connect with neighbors living outside, offering food, essential supplies, and a consistent presence of care. Even as resources tighten, this work continues because it meets immediate needs and builds the trust that can lead to something more.

On a typical week in Southeast Portland, our outreach team heads out with what we have to give.

Typically, that includes sack lunches and hygiene kits, generously prepared and donated by volunteers. Other times, we have items like blankets, tarps, or sleeping bags. And sometimes, especially this year, it means making do with less than we would like.

But we go anyway.

Catholic Charities of Oregon staff regularly connect with individuals living outside, meeting people where they are in places they already gather. We introduce ourselves, offer what we can, and spend time talking with people who are too often overlooked or ignored.

It looks simple. It looks like compassion in action.

But it is also essential.

Meeting Basic Needs, Building Trust

At its most immediate level, outreach helps meet basic needs. A meal. Clean socks. A tarp to stay dry. These are not extras. They are part of what it means to live with dignity.

Yet the impact goes beyond what we can hand out in a given moment.

Showing up consistently helps build trust. It lets people know there is someone they can turn to, someone who sees them and cares about what happens next. For many, that first interaction is the beginning of a longer connection to services, support, and stability.

Doing More With Less

Like many nonprofits, we are navigating a year of constrained resources. Funding changes have affected programs across our agency, including those that support housing and outreach efforts.

We’ve shared more about these challenges in our Housing Transitions Program updates, and we are seeing those impacts ripple outward. Fewer resources mean harder choices about what we can bring and how often.

Still, the need has not diminished.

If anything, it has grown.

And so we continue to show up with what we have, guided by the belief that even small acts of care matter.

Learning on the Frontlines

Our tiny outreach team is led by experienced staff who understand both the complexity and the humanity of this work. Alongside them are newer employees and interns, many of whom are pursuing careers in social work.

Outreach offers a real-world understanding of what people are facing and how systems succeed or fall short. It is a powerful, sometimes sobering introduction to a world that can be unkind and unfair.

It is also a reminder of why this work matters.

Why We Keep Going

We cannot solve homelessness in a single visit. We cannot meet every need.

But we can show up.

We can offer food, warmth, and small moments of relief. We can create space for conversation and connection. We can remind people that they are not alone.

We are proud to be part of this work and to stand alongside those carrying an immense burden.

Week after week, that is what we will continue to do.
