A Pair of Socks Can Change a Day

Posted by | Catholic Charities Communications

It might surprise you to learn that one of the most requested items among people experiencing homelessness is socks. Clean, dry socks can prevent infections, reduce pain, and offer a small but powerful sense of dignity. As we prepare Care Kits for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, we’re reminded that sometimes the simplest items make the biggest difference.

It’s easy to overlook socks.

They’re small. Inexpensive. Something most of us have plenty of.

But for someone experiencing homelessness, a clean, dry pair of socks can mean warmth, protection, and relief. Socks can prevent blisters from becoming infections. They can protect against moisture-related skin breakdown. They can make it possible to keep walking through a long day.

Shelter providers across the country consistently report that new socks are among the most requested — and least donated — items because they must be given new for hygiene reasons. Medical providers working with people experiencing homelessness also note how common preventable foot conditions are when people lack clean, dry socks and safe foot care.

Feet carry everything. When someone is outside day after day — in rain, cold, or long stretches on foot — foot health isn’t a small issue. It’s foundational.

That’s why socks are a cornerstone of the Care Kits we assemble and distribute at Catholic Charities of Oregon.

More Than Supplies

Our Care Kits bundle simple, essential items that protect health and affirm dignity. Each kit includes:

  • Travel-size shampoo and body wash
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Razor
  • Basic first aid supplies (bandages, cleansing wipes)
  • Chapstick
  • A protein snack
  • Water bottle
  • Tissues
  • A trash bag (which can double as a poncho or carrier)
  • New socks

Each item serves a practical purpose. A toothbrush helps prevent dental pain. Bandages protect minor wounds. Deodorant restores confidence before an appointment. Clean socks reduce the risk of infection and cold-related injury.

Together, they do something more.

They say: You matter. Your health matters. Your dignity matters.

Help Hope Rise

At the Celebration of Hope, we won’t just gather to celebrate. We will assemble Care Kits that go directly to neighbors experiencing homelessness across our community.

You can be part of that impact.

We are especially seeking new socks, one of the items we run out of most quickly. All sizes are welcome. Neutral colors are helpful, but every pair makes a difference.

  • Bring new socks to Celebration of Hope.
  • Drop off donations in advance.
  • Or purchase from our wish list so we can include them in Care Kits.

A pair of socks may seem small. But when placed in someone’s hands at just the right moment, socks becomes comfort. Protection. Dignity. And sometimes, that’s where hope begins.
